Abt 1893 – Albert William Rice was born and raised in the Holy Trinity Parish, Pirbright. Albert trained as a plumbers apprentice and is listed as a “Plumber (Apprentice)” on the 1911 Census.
1911 – The shop was opened in Pirbright by Albert providing plumbing and handyman services to the local community.
1938 –Frank and Jim took over from their father and the business was split. Jim ran the hardware shop and Frank ran the plumbing business located in a yard behind the shop.
All manor of plumbing services were carried out by the company including the sealing of lead coffins at the Brookwood Cemetery during the war. Jim Rice continued to run the shop providing all manor of goods in particular supplying the married quarters of Pirbright Army Camp with much needed supplies of paraffin and general goods.
During World War 2 Frank was called up for National Service and Jim carried on running the business in his absence.
1948 - Frank left the army and picked up the running the business.
1959 – Ian Wallis left A Smith and Sons in Woking and went to work for Frank Rice at the company in Pirbright.
1960 – Ian Wallis became partners with Frank Rice and F. N. Rice (Pirbright) Ltd was formed. The company comprised of around 7-8 employees providing services to the surrounding area.
Throughout the 60’s the company carried out work for the National Coal Board and continued on to become British Gas installers.
1982 – Mick Schofield joined the company dealing with building extensions etc moving the business into the domestic plumbing sector.
1993 –Frank Rice died.
1996 – Ian Wallis sold the business to Mr Derek Love of Pirbright Electrical Contractors Ltd and the company’s base of operations was transferred to Pirbright Electricals offices in Vapery Lane, Pirbright.
F. N. Rice (Pirbright) Ltd has moved from strength to strength adapting to the ever changing construction industry and taking new challenges in its stride. Thanks to the dedication and experience of its staff along with the valued assistance of Mr Wallis, over the years the business has thrived and expanded to provide services to the clients across the South East and throughout London. The precarious global energy market has highlighted the need for small scale renewable and alternative energy solutions, the growing demand has caused F N Rice to branch out and with the formation of Pirbright Renewable Energy the company now has the means to provide a dedicated outlet for these services. Due to the ever expanding portfolio of services provided by F N Rice the newly formed Pirbright Group provides an umbrella encompassing all services provided and now gives clients a one stop shop for any Mechanical, Electrical, Security, Maintenance, Automation and Renewable Energy Needs.
With a view to the future the Love family will strive to uphold the quality and hard working ethos that has been inherited from the Rice legacy and hopes to continue providing Mechanical and Electrical services for years to come.
